Josh Orange’s album The Fire & The Call is a folk rock record of 39 minutes which is based on themes of struggle, reflection, love, responsibility and the quest for redemption; the lyrics alternate between deeply personal experiences and more general questions concerning the world around us, each story revolving around moments of uncertainty, consequence and emotional change, and there is a strong feeling of honesty in the album, especially in the way its narratives deal with difficult experiences rather than shunning them.

‘No One Left to Blame’ is particularly striking in its depiction of destructive behaviour and the way deeply it can affect a person; the incident at the station marks the beginning of a more personal confrontation since the narrator comes to realise the damage that has been causing him to break down. The constant theme of ‘no one left to blame’ gives the song a strong sense of accountability, and the image of running from something that keeps on following increases the tension. ‘Who Needs Who’ broadens the perspective greatly by addressing division, hatred, conflict and uncertainty, the song having a wide social dimension because of references to walls, war, headlines and a world waiting for the ice to crack.

“Love Again” is directed inward and is about the possibility of overcoming hate and shame. The narrator thinks back on previous words, beliefs, and mistakes before taking responsibility and choosing to get rid of them. The repeated wish to love again is a clear statement of renewal. “Send Me an Angel” has a more sombre tone regarding the struggle, involving a person asking for strength as they face persistent destructive patterns. The trip through Nova Scotia, along the highway and into the isolated bar strengthens the impression of someone searching for a way back home while still bearing the burden of the past.

“I Knew” is an intimate reflection on enduring love and family. It recalls a first meeting, marriage, the birth of a daughter and the years spent together, creating a portrait of a relationship that has remained through difficult periods and shared experiences. Images of holding hands, watching their daughter grow and finding comfort in having someone by your side give the song a deeply personal quality. The Fire & The Call is particularly effective when its writing stays close to these lived experiences, allowing its characters to reflect on their choices, memories and the people who continue to give their lives meaning.
