Bobby Brown revealed that Irv Gotti paid him a hefty $1 million to appear in the music video for his collaboration with Ja Rule, “Thug Lovin’,” in the early 2000s.
During a guest appearance on the latest episode of Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, the New Edition legend shared some heartfelt words about the late mogul before recounting the story.
“Irv was a special cat,” Bobby said. “He loved seeing people succeed. He loved that. He loved making sure you got your just due, that you got paid. I think for the video ‘Thug Lovin,’ I got paid like $1 million to shoot it.”
He went on to describe the harrowing experience of filming a scene atop a building: “And the top of that building—coming off that helicopter—was the scariest shit ever in my life because I’m so afraid of heights. It was just like, I don’t think I can do this. And the wind was blowing, there were just all kinds of things going on. I was like, I have to nail this first take because I don’t wanna do it again. So I nailed the first take and I was out!”
Irv Gotti, who passed away on February 5 at the age of 54, had been battling health issues, including a second stroke, after he was diagnosed with diabetes. His brother, Chris, shared that Irv was reluctant to see doctors, which led to late diagnosis and complications.
In a touching tribute during a recent show in Canada on Nelly’s Where The Party At tour, Ja Rule honored Irv Gotti, playing a montage of photos on the big screen while reflecting on the mogul’s legacy. As the tribute concluded, Ja said, “Gotti, I love you, n-gga!” before launching into the song “I Cry.”
