The Amanda Emblem’s latest album, ‘The Wood’, is relaxed, down-to-earth, and heartfelt. The music is acoustic folk, including acoustic and electric guitars. There’s a flute, a harmonica, and a little jazz-like smooth guitar. Her songs are narrative, based on real-life experiences from her quiet life by the beach. The first track, “Hanging Flute”, is an instrumental introduction led by the flute. The song has an easy-going, cool but slightly eerie mood, which continues into the following track. “Storm in My Life” is an uptempo and catchy song. It has clever lyrics about love, hardship, and analogies to weather.

“Calm Seas” is a gentle and mellow song. The song is all about good times spent on the water with friends. Next is the title track, “The Wood”. This song is a slow and reflective track with beautiful lyrics. It was written after sitting at a wooden table, playing a handmade guitar, and looking out at the beauty of the natural world. “Ancient Dingo” is a more uptempo song that has elements of rock and reggae. In contrast, “Lazy Sunday” is just about being lazy with a chill slide guitar. “Thousands of Songs” is a fun and upbeat tune with heaps of harmony and character. Flutist Kelly King leads this song. On “Nananah”, the acoustic guitar leads the melody over an easy rhythm. It’s a spare song about a memory, when hearing original music for the first time just touched you.
“Together Feeling (The Captain)” is a soft and soothing song that conveys a feeling of serenity. Like sailing the seas in company with someone you can trust completely. “Stairs” is a more emotive song about stairs by the beach, and how they compare to the stairs in the city. The album concludes with the mysterious “Hanging Rock”, inspired by the Australian mystery novel of the same name, the song has an ethereal quality. It’s a captivating end to the album. The Amanda Emblem’s songs are direct and honest. ‘The Wood’ is tranquil and unpolished, and the songs are full of soul. This is a beautiful album for peaceful introspection.
