Drake and his legal team have swiftly responded to Universal Music Group’s warning that the rapper should “be careful what he asks for,” following his amended lawsuit against the music giant.
In a bold statement to HipHopDX, a spokesperson for Drake accused UMG of trying to manipulate public perception:
“UMG’s latest statement is a desperate attempt to spin the narrative and deflect from the truth: Drake is holding the largest music conglomerate in the world accountable for its actions — and doing so without fear.”
Addressing procedural developments, the spokesperson clarified that Drake’s legal maneuvering is strategic, not submissive:
“We dismissed the Texas discovery action because discovery will now proceed in New York. That’s not retreat — that’s victory. UMG dropped its First Amendment petition in Texas because it had no merit. That’s losing. And UMG knows the case against it is only getting stronger.”
The statement pulled no punches in calling out UMG’s leadership:
“Drake welcomes discovery. He has nothing to hide. It’s not Drake who should be worried — it’s UMG’s current leadership. We look forward to hearing from Lucian Grainge, John Janick, and other UMG employees under oath.”
Drake’s team also challenged the label’s claim to support creativity:
“UMG claims to champion artists, but instead exploits them. The creative community sees it, and Drake is joining a growing chorus demanding answers. The recent headlines involving UMG’s largest stakeholder only underline the need for transparency — all the way to the Board of Directors.”
Ending with a twist on UMG’s own warning, the spokesperson declared:
“UMG said, ‘Be careful what you ask for.’ Drake knows exactly what he asked for: the truth and accountability.”
Drake’s updated legal filing also references Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance of “Not Like Us,” where Lamar censored the word “pedophile” — a move Drake argues bolsters his defamation claims.
UMG has dismissed the amended suit as “frivolous and reckless,” warning that if the case moves forward, Drake himself will be subject to discovery.
