In Scenes from a Well Worn Path (Side Three), songwriting is presented as an exercise in observation, the collection dealing with the uncertainties of life without trying to simplify them. Jeremy’s music forms each piece around a main idea so that ordinary experiences can grow into reflections on happiness, relationships and society; instead of stating any conclusions, the songs allow for interpretation and thus achieve an engaging balance between straightforward storytelling and more profound intellectual questions.

‘No Price on Earth’ presents this viewpoint by focusing on the peace that can be found in ordinary daily life. Its main idea goes against the idea that significant experiences have to include great achievements or material benefits; a calm day, unmarred by disaster or sudden changes, is valuable in itself. The fact that the song does not attempt to build a dramatic case is what gives it its quiet and unobtrusive nature, setting out a point of view which is maintained right throughout the album. In this context, simplicity is not a drawback but rather a purposeful decision which enables the main observation to have greater impact.

Further avenues for exploration are offered by literary and mathematical references. The article “Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren” is based on the title of John Maynard Keynes’s 1930 essay and begins with a quote from Shakespeare’s Macbeth; these references enable an investigation into economic expectations and the uneven distribution of prosperity. On the other hand, “I Don’t Know” makes use of Fermat, prime numbers and irrational constants in order to create a love song around a failed mathematical proof, and since it finally comes to the realisation that love does not need proof, the piece has a natural conclusion without diminishing its emotional impact.

What makes this collection special is the assurance in putting forward ideas that may require more than one hearing to be fully appreciated. The songs, which are about three to three-and-a-half minutes long, stay focused, and their references lend themselves to a more careful listen. The arrangements are based on acoustic guitar and voice and are then expanded to include drums, bass and some subtle MIDI elements. The outcome is a thoughtful approach to songwriting in which there is merit in uncertainty, showing how a well-developed idea can become a convincing musical story without needing a single interpretation.
